ON THE SEISMIC SITUATION IN ROMANIA, MOLDOVA, SW OF UKRAINE, THE CRIMEA

Fig.1. The zones A and B, which can generate the strong earthquakes, dangerous for populating Romania, Moldova, Crimea and SW of Ukraine. Zone A controls in SS Vrancea (M>5.8), zone B controls in seismic subsystem Crimea (M>6.0).

Now let us estimate danger from the zone A (SS Vrancea). This miniature SS has the sizes of 40x80 km and a depth of 180 km it is included the deep-focus (70-180 km) seismoactive zone of Vrancea in Rumania, where periodically occur strong earthquakes (on November 10, 1940, M7.7; on March 4, 1977, M7.4; on August 30, 1986, M7.1; on May 30, 1990, M6.9). These earthquakes are dangerous by the fact that can cause destruction and the victims not only in Romania, but also in the extensive territory of the countries of South-Eastern Europe. We carried out additional hierarchical analysis of magnitude and depth of SS Vrancea for the forecast of devastating earthquakes on the basis of the method of seismic entropy.

Forecast of earthquakes from M≥7.3 (Romania, Moldova and the southwestern Ukraine). In the zone A occurs the preparation of catastrophic earthquake from M=7.4, on the scenario close to the earthquake of 1977. Track has the sufficiently high of the value of cumulative energy, but a scarcity of entropy. This means that for the generation of catastrophic earthquake today the zone of Vrancea on the time yet did not mature. At present the earthquake from M≥7.3 is not expected for this reason. With the present growth rate in the entropy the devastating earthquake with the magnitude M=7.4 can be prepared toward the end 2014 at the depths of 80-100 km. The probability of this earthquake now P=0.5% (Pk=14%, Pw=3%), by 2015 it will grow to P=1.7% (Pk=14%, Pw=13%) (see Fig.2).

Forecast of earthquakes from 6.3Ms<7.3. At present earthquakes from 6.3<M<7.3 are not expected. Probability of the generation of strong earthquake for the depths of 80-100 km high P=11% (Pk=26%, Pw=41%), and for the depths of 100-150 km low P=0.9% (Pk=7%, Pw=12%). At these depths, by 2012 can be prepared the earthquake from M=6.4.

The inhabitants of Romania, Moldova, southwest of the Ukraine now and within the next few years can be calm - seismic danger from the catastrophic earthquake as yet no.

Seismic hazard in Romania, Moldova and in the south of the Ukraine is caused first of all by destructive deep-focus earthquakes in Vrancea region, Rumania, which is controlled in SS Vrancea (zone A to Fig.1). For the south of the Ukraine, Crimea seismic danger is caused by the coastal strong earthquakes of the Crimea and is controlled in the seismic subsystem the Crimea (zone B to Fig.1).

These seismic zones have nothing in common and it is no connected with the last catastrophic earthquakes in Haiti and Chile. Seismic zone of Crimea indirectly, but very weakly linked to seismic activity in Eastern Turkey. In Bulletin 002 were published the forecasts for Vrancea and Crimea on February 28, 2010.

In connection with emergent panic we give below more detailed information about the seismic situation in the region. At the beginning let us estimate danger from the zone B.

Forecast of earthquakes from M>6.0 in the zone B (Crimea, South of Ukraine). Here we is forecast all strong earthquakes, which can cause main destruction and victim. Earthquakes from M>6.0 are not expected, their probability is equal to zero.

Inhabitants of Crimea and the South of Ukraine now and in the coming years can be calm - seismic risk from Crimean earthquakes on the similarity of Yalta earthquake 1927, M6.8 them does not threaten.

MONITORING AND FORECAST

"I am writing to you on behalf of the thousands of my fellow citizens, many of whom are in panic from publications in the media about the possible strong deadly earthquake in Ukraine and Moldova..." (Mail, 10.03.2010). On the request of the visitors of site we give detailed information about the seismic situation and the seismic danger in Romania, Moldova, SW of Ukraine, the Crimea.     /March 14, 2010/
