EARTHQUAKE NORTH OF ANDAMAN ISLAND, INDIA REGION

2009.08.10  19:55:39     14.01N   92.92E    H=33 km    Ìs=7.6

This strong earthquake occurred in the region of Andaman Islands, India, on the northern boundary of India plate and the Burma micro-plate (see Fig.1). Earthquake had normal mechanism and occurred on the fault plane of north-northeastern stretch and close vertical faulting. Earthquake arose under the action of the predominant tensile stresses, oriented in the southeastern direction. Preliminary analysis shows that this style of faulting is consistent with the earthquake occurring as a result of stresses generated by bending of the India plate as it subducts beneath the Burma microplate. In spite of large force, earthquakes with such mechanisms have local nature, what the distribution of aftershocks area indicates, and they do not lead to the formation of the fatal waves of tsunami as with the earthquake of December 26, 2004

As we already noted (see Areas of application of the method), earthquakes with the normal mechanism badly or not at all are predicted in the seismic systems. Earthquakes with such mechanisms require thinner analysis. Preliminary analysis shows that, as in the case with Kuril, taking into account the local nature of this earthquake, tectonic special features and boundary of the arrangement of source we it can export beyond the framework of the volume of seismic system micro-plate Burma. So that the results of the forecast for this SS, given in Bulletin 001 remain without the changes. The region of the Andaman Islands on the previous remains potential holding areas of catastrophic earthquake.
